THE GLORY OF VENICE

May 12th, 2018, 7:30 p.m.

Hemmle Recital Hall, TTU School of Music

At the height of the Renaissance and birth of the Baroque periods, Venice and its spectacular St. Mark’s Cathedral were known throughout the Western world for musical innovation and profound creativity. The Venetian School represented a major stylistic shift from the prevailing polyphonic writing of the middle Renaissance, and gave rise to the poly-choral tradition (cori spezzati, or “separated choirs”), wherein choirs and instruments were spatially separated throughout the room. To conclude its season, The Lubbock Chorale and consorts of brass instruments will perform a concert that honors and celebrates this rich tradition, highlighting three master composers: Giovanni Gabrieli (1554-1612), Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), and Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672). Concert patrons will be sumptuously surrounded by sound, as both singers and instruments perform antiphonally throughout Hemmle Recital Hall.
